Raise an Eco Friendly Child
In today’s time and age, more and more people seem to become apathetic to their surroundings. A lot of children are too engrossed in their video games that they no longer seem to care about the environment. These kids have already developed nature deficit disorder, something that can be difficult to treat. This is why it is important for parents to instill in their children the value of being environmentally-friendly as early as possible. While you may not be able to make a huge difference in just a day, the planet’s future actually rests on the hands of parents who care about it. Here are some tips on how to raise an eco-friendly child.
Be Environmentally Cautious Yourself
In order for your child to be concerned about the environment, you have to be his/her role model. You need to be environmentally cautious yourself. Even if you keep on telling your kid that he/she should respect nature, if you do not practice what you preach, then nothing good will happen. Show them how to practice the acts of reducing, reusing, and recycling. Go for eco-friendly products, particularly those that can be reused. If you have spare time, join organizations in your neighborhood that aim to protect the environment.
Come Up With Kid- and Eco-Friendly Activities
Once you have started becoming more eco-friendly, it will be easier for you to get your child to emulate your practices. However, there are certain activities that only adults can perform, so make sure that those you will teach your child are kid-friendly. A great example of this is to have him/her start a recyclables bin. Ask him to separate stuff that can be recycled from those that really need to be thrown out. Environmentally-themed movies are great resources for these, such as Ice Age and Ferngully. There are also books that they can read that will teach them about eco-friendly practices.
